  7. COMMON GRACKLE-Bridgeport Reservoir-Mono County LINK
    DATE: May 26, 2018 @ 2:49pm, 4 month(s) ago
    This morning, May 26, we arrived at the Bridgeport boat ramp (the one with trees and just a restroom) at 9:45am. We noticed a male Great-tailed Grackle in a tree near the restroom. We next observed the Great-tailed Grackle foraging on the lawn. We were observing a pair of nesting Western Kingbirds when a second grackle flew in to a tree in front of us. The second grackle immediately appeared different and we quickly realized it was a COMMON GRACKLE. The COMMON GRACKLE was of the expected bronze back race. We observed it for over ten minutes as it flew around to several trees, flew across the truck and boat trailer staging area, stopped briefly at a tree on the edge of the reservoir and then flew south in the direction of the town of Bridgeport. Details will be submitted to the CBRC.

  9. Request for documentation for CBRC review species LINK
    DATE: Nov 17, 2016, 2 year(s) ago
    Greeting Calbirders,   As fall migration is winding down, I hope that you all got out and saw some good birds over the past few months. There were a number of reports on listservs and on eBird of California Bird Records Committee (CBRC)
    review species . If you saw any of these, I encourage you to submit your documentation (written descriptions, photos, and/or audio recordings) to the CBRC. In particular, I have included a list below
    for which the CBRC has received little or no documentation. If you have not submitted documentation to the CBRC previously and you don’t know what to include, please visit the
    CBRC website where you can find
    submission guidelines as well as a
    report form . One of the CBRC’s primary purposes is to permanently maintain documentation of rare birds in order to better understand the status and distribution of birds in California, as well
    as to preserve these records for future research. Your submission of documentation greatly facilitates the work of the CBRC in pursuing this goal.   Great () Frigatebird – Point Pinos MTY, 2 Nov: 0 reports Nazca Booby – Point Pinos MTY, 14 Nov: 0 reports Black Vulture – Bodega Bay SON, 22 Oct-8 Nov: 0 reports Bar-tailed Godwit – Shoreline Park ALA, 3-5 Sep: 1 report Little Stint – Tolowa Dunes DN, 1 Aug: 1 report Little Stint – Centerville Wetlands HUM, 31 Aug: 1 report Little Stint – San Jacinto Wildlife Area RIV, 9-15 Oct: 3 reports Red-necked Stint – Humboldt Bay HUM, 14 Aug: 3 reports Red-necked Stint – Eel River Estuary HUM, 1 Sep: 0 reports Red-necked Stint – San Jacinto Wildlife Area RIV, 5-9 Sep: 3 reports Thick-billed Murre – near Bodega Head SON, 9 Oct: 3 reports Yellow-bellied Flycatcher – Humboldt Bay HUM, 16-21 Sep: 2 reports Dusky-capped Flycatcher – Antonelli Pond SCZ, 4 Sep: 0 reports Dusky-capped Flycatcher – Point Pinos MTY, 14-16 Nov: 0 reports Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher – Carpinteria Creek SBA, 30 Sep: 0 reports Blue-headed Vireo – Fort Rosecrans Nat’l Cemetery SD, 18 Sep: 0 reports Winter Wren – Crystal Spring SBE/INY, 5-7 Nov: 1 report Dusky Warbler – Oyster Point SM, 24-26 Sep: 4 reports Rufous-backed Robin – Chiriaco Summit RIV, 13-14 Oct: 0 reports Rufous-backed Robin – Desert Center RIV, 12-16 Nov: 0 reports Mourning Warbler – Galileo Hill KER, 10-11 Sep, 3 reports Cape May Warbler – Point Reyes MRN, 11 Oct: 0 reports Cape May Warbler – Palo Alto SCL, 15-17 Oct: 1 report Rusty Blackbird – Smith River DN, 15 Nov: 0 reports Streak-backed Oriole – Desert Center RIV, 23-24 Oct: 3 reports Common Grackle – Smith River DN, 15 Nov: 0 reports   Thank you, Tom   Thomas A. 11. Le Conte's Sparrow and Grackle LINK
    DATE: Nov 23, 2015 @ 9:46am, 3 year(s) ago
    Hi all, the Le Conte's Sparrow was still present at Castaic Lagoon this morning from about 7:40until at least 8:00 when we left. At about 7:00 before the sparrow made an appearance, I picked up on a strange dry, short, down-slurred call flying overhead. I snapped a few poor photographs and thought the bird looked a lot like a Common Grackle. It was flying west over Castaic Lagoon fairly high and just continued flying until I lost it. 13. Documentation for CBRC review species LINK
    DATE: Oct 15, 2015 @ 2:05pm, 3 year(s) ago
    California birders,

    This fall is already shaping up to be an exciting one, with many rare birds found in September and through the first half of October. Some of these birds are not only unusual locally, but are quite rare throughout the state of California.
    As such, the California Bird Records Committee (CBRC) requests documentation of these birds for evaluation and archiving. I have summarized below some recent records for which the CBRC solicits documentation; if you have photos, written descriptions, or other
    documentation for any of these birds, please consider taking the time to send them to the secretary at the email address below. I do realize that some of these birds were found very recently, so perhaps documentation is still forthcoming. Feel free to forward
    this message to local listservs as appropriate. The CBRC website has a complete
    list of review species as well as an
    optional form for submitting written documentation.

    Birds for which the CBRC has received no documentation:

    Blue-headed Vireo (possible), Santa Barbara County
    Dusky Warbler, Marin County
    Common Grackle, San Bernardino County
    Common Grackle, Del Norte County

    Birds for which the CBRC has received minimal documentation:

    Red-footed Booby, Platform Eureka, Orange County (1 report)
    Glossy Ibis, Yolo County (1 report)
    Curlew Sandpiper (juvenile), Santa Clara County (2 reports)

    This afternoon I learned of a Common Grackle report (observer) from yesterday that was seen near the B street Pier at the Crescent City Harbor. Late this afternoon I finally found the bird with a small flock of Brewer's Blackbirds at 4th and B Streets. -Alan D. Barron

    The photo looked to me more like a Great-tailed Grackle.

  23. Common grackle in Lassen Co. LINK
    DATE: May 16, 2012 @ 7:29pm, 6 year(s) ago
    On May 4, 2012, a male grackle made a very brief appearance at my feeder. I got
    an unsatisfactory look and, based on probabilities, I thought it likely a
    great-tailed. Fortunately, it reappeared on May 14, and it is a common grackle
    (versicolor). Some identifiable photos are posted on the Lassen County Birds
    list. It was not seen between the 4th and 14th, and I have not seen it since
    the latter date. Thus I have no clue what it is up to nor what its pattern may
    be. It is not obviously associated with the other local blackbirds.

    Lowell sent me the photos; not enough of the bird shows to be definitive, to
    me at least. But I think it should be checked out. I'll be happy to
    forward the photos to anyone.

    Subject: Possible COGR
    To: John Sterling , Bruce Deuel <

    This bird was larger than several BRBLs near it. It was sitting in plain
    view facing me. It constantly pumped its tail up and down. A large truck
    went by and the bird moved deeper into the small tree that it was sitting
    in. I managed to get two digi-scoped pictures of the bird in which some of
    it can be seen. I wanted to get the bird out of the deep cover so I got my
    iPod and played the COGR call and the bird flew out of the tree, across the
    road and up the hill.

    I hung around for about half an hour. Twice, it landed on the road side
    fence about 100 feet from me. Each time a vehicle came along and scared the
    bird off before I could get a picture of it.

    The bird was first seen at 13335 Simms Rd. in Tuolumne County. I last saw it
    flying up the hill towards 13301 Simms Rd.

  29. 2010 big year (long) LINK
    DATE: Jan 3, 2011 @ 7:07pm, 8 year(s) ago
    Calbirders,
    In 2010 I fulfilled a long-time goal of doing a big year in California.
    The year ended with 444 species. In addition, I saw 16 non-countable
    species. I birded daily except for March through mid-June due to a
    work-induced hiatus.
    My non-birding friends found some aspects of my big year experience
    humorous, interesting and/or offensive, including:
    * over 32,000 miles driven in the State
    * 18 round-trip plane trips to Northern California from LA
    * 5 unsuccessful trips from LA to Newberry Springs to look for Common
    Grackle (I eventually got a different bird in LA)
    * 2 trips / 4 mostly rainy days spent looking for Brown Shrike
    * 14 unsuccessful trips to La Mirada Creek Park to look for
    Dusky-capped Flycatcher (I got it on my 15th trip. I have no plans to
    ever visit LMCP again.)
    * 4 unsuccessful trips to look for the Pyrrhuloxia

    I missed 65 of the 499 countable species reported in eBird this year,
    including some common species:
    * Sooty Grouse
    * 14 pelagic species
    * California Condor
    * Barred Owl
    * Northern Saw-whet Owl
    * Gray Vireo
    * Pine Grosbeak
    I was left with a new appreciation for the heroic effort of the Howes in
    their record big year. I also developed a strong belief that eBird is
    an important and powerful tool for capturing status and distribution
    data. I believe we are just scratching the surface of what that
    database will eventually become. BirdsEye was a great tool for planning
    trips using eBird data.
    Thanks to the many birders who report in eBird or the listservs, and to
    those who provided generous help!
    Below is a list of the birds I observed during the year. Feel free to
    contact me offline if you have any questions or if you would like to
    flame me for my use of fossil fuels.
