Buff-breasted Sandpiper (Tryngites subruficollis) - BBSA (recent eBird sightings, view CBRC records, range map
)

  1. Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area LINK
    DATE: Aug 31, 2018, 20 day(s) ago
A Buff-breasted Sandpiper flew in and landed on a dike not far from me at 6:50pm at the August shorebird ponds east of Lot C. I was able to get a couple distant photos before making notifications. These are posted at https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48204550

The bird picked up and relocated a couple times. The bird was last seen working the dike between the first and second check in the vicinity of the gulls, and then seen down in south end of the first check. Only previous county record is Sept 2, 2002 at Davis Wetlands (Jon R King). That bird stayed less than an hour. I'm not sure about other Central Valley records.

Park in Lot C and head east across the road.

Dove season starts tomorrow, but all areas above the auto tour loop will be open to the public; the closure starts at the check station. I've included a map in eBird.

  3. Buff-breasted Sandpiper in Richmond LINK
    DATE: Aug 24, 2018 @ 10:32pm, 26 day(s) ago
    Birders,

Many thanks to Logan Kahle for getting the word out earlier. At least a dozen birders were able to see the bird this afternoon.

Now that Im back home Ive been trying to catch up on some of that August shorebird-migration magic. This afternoon after leaving work I decided to check out the Richmond sewage ponds, formally the West County Wastewater District Treatment Plant. After signing in at the office I went off to survey the ponds and was disappointed with the lack of bird activity. In the second large pond (east of the office), there were just three distant medium-sized sandpipers with buffy breasts on the mud that caught my eye. I went back to my car to get the camera and was shocked to realize that I was looking at one BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER associating with two BAIRDS SANDPIPERS.

The three pipers were very mellow and cooperative for the two hours that I stayed on site -eventually joined by a third Bairds Sandpiper and a small number of peeps. The Buff-breasted is a first year bird with crisp plumage, bright yellow legs and white edges on the wing feathers.

I have put up six photos on my flickr feed starting here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/amaizlish/30383567858/ - I also included most of them on the eBird report. This was probably my most desired life-bird and it was quite exciting to stumble about it. According to Logan this is a first county record for Contra Costa County.

I do not know if the WCWD is open on the weekends. You need to sign in at the office - the staff and workers are always extremely friendly to birders on the few times I have interacted with them.

Friday evening a Long-billed Murrelet in basic plumage was floating around
close to a young Pigeon Guillemot between the end of the B-street Pier and
the jetty. The bird was drifting away as it was getting dark.
One Buff-breasted Sandpiper is still present around Lake Talowa, as are 2
Juvenile Pacific Golden-Plovers and 1 American.

  9. Buff-breasted Sandpiper in Central Valley LINK
    DATE: Aug 29, 2011 @ 10:59pm, 7 year(s) ago
Dennis Cavallo found the first Placer County and the second Central Valley
record of a Buff-breasted Sandpiper this morning at the Lincoln WTP on Fiddyment
Road. This is a great find and the first one seen by multiple observers in the
    Central Valley.

I have posted photos on my "Recent Photos" gallery on my photo website. Click
on photo gallery tab on my homepage at www.sterlingbirds.com

I also saw and photographed the Solitary Sandpiper found yesterday by Steve and
Diane Rose at the Marysville WTP. This is the first record for Yuba County!
The Pectoral Sandpiper, three Red-necked Phalaropes and a juvenile Lesser
    Yellowlegs also continued there.

The Marysville WTP can be accessed by car (but be careful driving on the levees)
by calling Randy Kerzic at 530 682-0833

  11. 2010 big year (long) LINK
    DATE: Jan 3, 2011 @ 7:07pm, 8 year(s) ago
    Calbirders,
In 2010 I fulfilled a long-time goal of doing a big year in California.
The year ended with 444 species. In addition, I saw 16 non-countable
species. I birded daily except for March through mid-June due to a
    work-induced hiatus.
My non-birding friends found some aspects of my big year experience
    humorous, interesting and/or offensive, including:
    * over 32,000 miles driven in the State
    * 18 round-trip plane trips to Northern California from LA
    * 5 unsuccessful trips from LA to Newberry Springs to look for Common
Grackle (I eventually got a different bird in LA)
    * 2 trips / 4 mostly rainy days spent looking for Brown Shrike
    * 14 unsuccessful trips to La Mirada Creek Park to look for
Dusky-capped Flycatcher (I got it on my 15th trip. I have no plans to
    ever visit LMCP again.)
    * 4 unsuccessful trips to look for the Pyrrhuloxia

I missed 65 of the 499 countable species reported in eBird this year,
    including some common species:
    * Sooty Grouse
    * 14 pelagic species
    * California Condor
    * Barred Owl
    * Northern Saw-whet Owl
    * Gray Vireo
    * Pine Grosbeak
I was left with a new appreciation for the heroic effort of the Howes in
their record big year. I also developed a strong belief that eBird is
an important and powerful tool for capturing status and distribution
data. I believe we are just scratching the surface of what that
database will eventually become. BirdsEye was a great tool for planning
    trips using eBird data.
Thanks to the many birders who report in eBird or the listservs, and to
    those who provided generous help!
Below is a list of the birds I observed during the year. Feel free to
contact me offline if you have any questions or if you would like to
flame me for my use of fossil fuels.

  13. Buff-breasted Sandpiper LA River LINK
    DATE: Aug 25, 2009 @ 4:17pm, 9 year(s) ago
    Hi All,

I just got a call from Karen Gilbert. She and Jeff and Dick Barth
have found a Buff-breasted Sandpiper on the LA River near DeForest
Park. When I spoke with her the bird was moving around and they were
    trying to refind it.

Let's hope this doesn't turn out to be another find like the HudWit
and it stays for a while.

    Good birding,

  15. Bird Box on hiatus LINK
    DATE: Jun 14, 2008 @ 5:57pm, 10 year(s) ago
    Hi Birders

The Bird Box is no longer functioning at the old number. Why I'm
happy to announce Los Angeles Audubon will be the caretaker of the
Bird Box. Once we have the system up and running, we will publicize
    its new number.

We'd like to give a heartfelt thanks to Bill and Kathleen Principe
for developing and maintaining the Bird Box for so many years. I
remember when Nick and I first used it back in the early 90s, it was
announcing the finding of the first (and still only) California Fork-
tailed Flycatcher, way up north in Jenner. I also recall the great
reports coming in of the Little Curlew at the Santa Maria river mouth
also from the early 90s. The Bird Box has been a very useful and
important source to birders not only in California but across the
country. We've used it many, many times. I alerted birders to
recent rarities such as the Buff-breasted Sandpipers in Ventura and
Los Angeles Counties, and most recently the Black-legged Kittiwake at
Malibu Lagoon. Bird Box is still a great reporting tool, filling an
important niche for those from out of town, others without internet
access, with a computer on the fritz, or at work with only a phone,
and those in the field with exciting finds to report. Yes, internet
listservs have become the gold standard for information disbursal,
but they don't cover all the bases. Once we're up and running again,
please think of Bird Box when you want to get all of the latest, and
when you want to get the word out to everyone. This will always be an
appropriate place to cross-post significant finds. Once it's running,
I hope to see many of you taking advantage of this great reporting tool!

We wish Bill and Kathleen all the best in their move to Massachusetts.

    Happy Birding!

  17. New SF County Records from SE Farallon and Island Update LINK
    DATE: Oct 15, 2007 @ 6:09pm, 11 year(s) ago
Hello birders. I am happy to announce that during monitoring work on Southeast
Farallon Island this fall, biologists from PRBO Conservation Science have added
four species to the San Francisco County list.

In addition to the first California record of Common Rosefinch that I announced
earlier this fall (photos of which are on Joe Morlan's website at
courtesy of Rob Fowler), the new
    species are:

Little Stint: an adult photographed on 24 and 27 August was the 5th or 6th for
Northern California, pending acceptance by the CBRC.
Sandhill Crane: one individual present from 10 to 12 October, presumably the
same individual seen by Kevin McKereghan at Ft Funston on the mainland on 13
    October
Grace's Warbler: a young male seen on 14 October. This was the 4th record for
Northern California, pending acceptance by the CBRC.

In addition many other notable species or numbers of individuals have been seen
on or from the Island this fall:

Flesh-footed Shearwater: One was seen during a seawatch on September 2nd
Short-tailed Shearwater: Small numbers have been seen fairly regularly since 28
    September
Brown Booby: One adult female that has been present since at least September
2006 is still resident on the Island. She favors the eastern ridge of Sugarloaf
Rock. There have been two other individuals on the Island, an adult female and
    a subadult female.
Cackling Goose: One present daily since October 11th was one of fewer than 10
records for the Island since the split.
Sora: One on 26 August was one of fewer than 25 recorded on the Island
Virginia Rail: One on 26 August was about the 9th for the Island
Snowy Plover: One on 24 September was the 5th for the Island
Long-billed Curlew: One seen daily between 22 August and 6 October was the 9th
    for the Island
Red Knot: One on 27 August was the 7th or 8th for the Island
Buff-breasted Sandpiper: One on 31 August was the 10th for the Island
South Polar Skua: 2 seen on 9 October tied the Island high count
Black Swift: One on 8 September was one of fewer than 18 records for the Island
Chimney Swift: 6 on 14 October set the Island high count
Red-breasted Sapsucker: One on 20 September was about the 15th record for the
    Island
Tropical Kingbird: One 9-11 October was banded, and was only the 15th record on
    the Island
Blue-headed Vireo: One present 9-11 September was on the early side for the
    State, and was banded.
Red-eyed Vireo: One was present on 20 September
Purple Martin: Three individuals between 8 and 16 September is an above average
    total for the fall
Violet-green Swallow: An estimated 115 on October 14 set the Island high count
Townsend's Solitaire: 2 on 20 September tied the Island high count. One was
    banded.
Gray Catbird: One present between 15 and 28 September was an adult and was about
    the 10th fall record.
Tennessee Warbler: There have been 4 so far this fall. 2 have been banded.
Chestnut-sided Warbler: There have been 9 so far this fall. 3 have been banded.

  19. San Diego, CA--Rare Bird Alert, 28 Sept 2007--CORRECTION LINK
    DATE: Sep 29, 2007 @ 1:52pm, 11 year(s) ago
My original posting (9/28/07) listed a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER as
being seen by Jon Feenstra on 9/23/07 at the Tijuana R Vly, Dairy
Mart Rd sod farm, N-end. The original report, via Matt Sadowski, was
for an UPLAND SANDPIPER, as follows (posted on SD Birds):

"Jon Feenstra, Mike San Miguel, and Todd McGrath found an Upland
    Sandpiper at
the Dairy Mart Road sod farm in the Tijuana River Valley. The bird
    was found
at the north end of the sod farm apparently not on the sod but
    perched on
some wood near the road. It was extremely skittish, flushing repeatedly,
ranging across the entire north/south length of the sod farm, landing
    in the
plowed dirt portion, and even landing in the weedy dirt between the
    Tijuana
River and the border fence on one occasion...."

This was a transcription error in the Excel database I use to record
the reports. Thanks to Doug Aguillard, who graciously pointed this
    error out to me.

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery has an interim director who does not
understand that birders on good behavior do not disrupt the decorum
of the cemetery. Please be on your best behavior when visiting the
cemetery and avoid potential conflicts with other visitors. If you
are visiting the cemetery to enjoy the solitude of the location, even
with binoculars, you should be welcome. We are seeking a no-conflict

  23. Yellow Wagtail and the Oxnard Plain LINK
    DATE: Sep 15, 2007 @ 4:20am, 11 year(s) ago
    Hey all,

This afternoon David Vander Pluym and I chased and saw the YELLOW WAGTAIL at
Malibu Lagoon and found it easily where previously reported. Excellent bird. See
    previous posts for directions.

At Malibu we ran into Jon Dunn and his birding group, Tom Wurster, and Liga
Auzuins, whom we birded with for the rest of the afternoon. After leaving
Malibu, David and I stopped by Sycamore Canyon where we quickly refound a LEAST
FLYCATCHER that Jon found this morning. The bird was seen from the bridge at the
entrance and was rather skittish. A MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE here was at extremely low
elevation and early in the season.

At the Laguna Road Tamarisks we met up with Tom, Liga, and Jon & group where we
found an HY BLACKPOLL WARBLER and after some work refound the HY male
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER found this morning by Dick Norton.

Soon after leaving there we got a call from Tom (who left before we did) that he
and Liga had just found two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS on the sod at Arnold Road.
We raced over there and watched the birds as it got dark. Good way to end an
    excellent day of birding.

Jon told me that earlier today they saw a Golden-Plover (I presume Pacific) at
Arnold Road and the continuing adult Reddish Egret at Mugu Lagoon.

    Good birding,

  25. Arctic Warbler continues in Kern County, Buff-breasted Sandpiper in Los Angeles County LINK
    DATE: Sep 9, 2007 @ 6:18am, 11 year(s) ago
    Hi Birders

This morning in Kern County at Galileo Hills (Kern County), we
experienced two (2) ARCTIC WARBLERs (one bright and crisp and the
other less so). As we watched the first warbler, there was a radio
call that alerted birders to a possible second Arctic Warbler. We
walked over and saw it and noted it was not as finely marked as the
first bird. So there were two groups of birders at the same time
watching an Arctic Warbler - unprecedented!! Also seen were BLACK
AND WHITE WARBLER, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and AMERICAN REDSTART.

Upon our way back to Glendale, we made a visit to the Piute Ponds
(L.A. County). At 6:00pm, I scanned the shore of a shallow pond and
found a beautiful BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER (chunky, compact body,
round head, buffy coloration, black-centered scalloping on the
mantle, yellow legs). It was foraging by itself but also in its
presence were WESTERN SANDPIPER and LEAST SANDPIPER. Nick found a
single basic plumage BLACK TERN. Without an authorization for access
letter, you are not allowed to enter the premises. I took digiscope
photos but from a distance and with windy conditions, I was only able
to take photodocumentation photos. We watched it for over an hour and
    drove away from it.

A SUPER day in the high desert!

  27. BUFF-BREASTED and STILT at Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co. LINK
    DATE: Sep 3, 2007 @ 9:41pm, 11 year(s) ago
This morning at 9, I saw the continuing BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and the
STILT SANDPIPER at Struve Slough in Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co. I
followed the directions posted to Harkins Slough Rd. I saw others on
the other side of the slough and don't think they could see the birds
from where they were standing. There are wide bands of vegetation that
block views, especially of the Buff-breasted. It stayed fairly close to
the edge of the vegetation. I suggest that if you first don't see the
birds, try both sides of the slough.

  29. Baird's & Buff-breasted Sandpipers at Struve Slough LINK
    DATE: Sep 3, 2007 @ 5:51pm, 11 year(s) ago
Yesterday (9/2) my wife & I went to Struve Slough in Watsonville, Ca.
We found a group from Monterey on field trip. A BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER & BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, both juveniles, were scoped from the
area described by Roger Wolfe. A few of us noticed a path on the east
side of the slough & went to investigate from that side. We were able
to get w/in 25 yds. of the birds from the other side; just below
where some construction equipment & materials are stored. While
viewing the birds from there, TWO juvenile BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were
seen as well as the Buff-breasted. (I have a rather poor picture
showing both Baird's standing side by side.) We didn't find the Stilt
    Sandpiper.
Access to the east side of Struve Slough is in a residential
neighborhood, so parking is minimal. Exit Hwy 1 at Harkins
Slough/Green Valley Rd., driving north on Green Valley Rd. Turn right
(east) on Main St., cross Struve Slough & turn right (south) on
Ohlone Parkway. Make a right on Kingfisher Dr., then a right on Heron
Ct. At the end of Heron Ct. is trail access to the east side of
Struve Slough. Parking may be available on Heron Ct. or Kingfisher
Dr. Walk back north towards the bridge construction to find the birds
on the mud flat just before the bridge.
