I just scoured both Ballona Cr. jetties, east and west of the Pacific St.

bridge as well as the beach south of the creek to no avail. High tide

right now probably isn't helping. Will check later this afternoon as low

tide is supposed to be around 6pm.

I was at Playa del Rey this morning, walking along the creek, and saw a godwit that caught my eye. Links to photos below. The white eyebrow that was bright and extended back behind the eye is what caught my attention. It was with a couple other marbled godwits and willets and plovers. Besides the eyebrow, and perhaps a less-cinnamony coloring, it didn't look all that different anywhere from the marbled godwits (maybe slightly smaller. maybe). I was on it with my binoculars when it and another godwit flew off, directly away from me. I wasn't able to observe any underwing details, but I did see the back and tail. The rump patch appeared whiter, or at least contrasted a bit more with the back and end of tail than the rump of the Marbled Godwit it flew away with. I did not notice any obvious black at the end of the tail, or see any obvious white stripe in the wing, but I wasn't intentionally looking for those features. I can't say whether the rump was streaked or not.

The birds were headed west toward and beyond the Pacific Street bridge and I didn't see them land.

    DATE: Nov 17, 2016, 11 month(s) ago
Greeting Calbirders, † As fall migration is winding down, I hope that you all got out and saw some good birds over the past few months. There were a number of reports on listservs and on eBird of California Bird Records Committee (CBRC)
review species . If you saw any of these, I encourage you to submit your documentation (written descriptions, photos, and/or audio recordings) to the CBRC. In particular, I have included a list below
for which the CBRC has received little or no documentation. If you have not submitted documentation to the CBRC previously and you donít know what to include, please visit the
CBRC website where you can find
submission guidelines as well as a
report form . One of the CBRCís primary purposes is to permanently maintain documentation of rare birds in order to better understand the status and distribution of birds in California, as well
as to preserve these records for future research. Your submission of documentation greatly facilitates the work of the CBRC in pursuing this goal. † Great () Frigatebird Ė Point Pinos MTY, 2 Nov: 0 reports Nazca Booby Ė Point Pinos MTY, 14 Nov: 0 reports Black Vulture Ė Bodega Bay SON, 22 Oct-8 Nov: 0 reports Bar-tailed Godwit Ė Shoreline Park ALA, 3-5 Sep: 1 report Little Stint Ė Tolowa Dunes DN, 1 Aug: 1 report Little Stint Ė Centerville Wetlands HUM, 31 Aug: 1 report Little Stint Ė San Jacinto Wildlife Area RIV, 9-15 Oct: 3 reports Red-necked Stint Ė Humboldt Bay HUM, 14 Aug: 3 reports Red-necked Stint Ė Eel River Estuary HUM, 1 Sep: 0 reports Red-necked Stint Ė San Jacinto Wildlife Area RIV, 5-9 Sep: 3 reports Thick-billed Murre Ė near Bodega Head SON, 9 Oct: 3 reports Yellow-bellied Flycatcher Ė Humboldt Bay HUM, 16-21 Sep: 2 reports Dusky-capped Flycatcher Ė Antonelli Pond SCZ, 4 Sep: 0 reports Dusky-capped Flycatcher Ė Point Pinos MTY, 14-16 Nov: 0 reports Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher Ė Carpinteria Creek SBA, 30 Sep: 0 reports Blue-headed Vireo Ė Fort Rosecrans Natíl Cemetery SD, 18 Sep: 0 reports Winter Wren Ė Crystal Spring SBE/INY, 5-7 Nov: 1 report Dusky Warbler Ė Oyster Point SM, 24-26 Sep: 4 reports Rufous-backed Robin Ė Chiriaco Summit RIV, 13-14 Oct: 0 reports Rufous-backed Robin Ė Desert Center RIV, 12-16 Nov: 0 reports Mourning Warbler Ė Galileo Hill KER, 10-11 Sep, 3 reports Cape May Warbler Ė Point Reyes MRN, 11 Oct: 0 reports Cape May Warbler Ė Palo Alto SCL, 15-17 Oct: 1 report Rusty Blackbird Ė Smith River DN, 15 Nov: 0 reports Streak-backed Oriole Ė Desert Center RIV, 23-24 Oct: 3 reports Common Grackle Ė Smith River DN, 15 Nov: 0 reports † Thank you, Tom † Thomas A. Birders:

Yesterday afternoon George Peyton found the continuing Bar-tailed Godwit in pond A17. He is unable to post, so enlisted help. Here are excerpts from Georgeís email:

"Today (i.e., August 28) I watched the Bar-tailed Godwit from the Pumphouse on the levee looking into A-17 from 1:40 p.m. until past 2 p.m. ... There have not been any reports of the Bar-tailed Godwit posted today, although there have been two reports of a Ruff near the EEC, and Jim Lomax reported two Wandering Tattlers at Alviso. All the birders I ran into hiking out the levee said no one had seen it today, and I saw no birders coming back, and no one was there when I spotted it.

"It took me 9 scans by scope of the full A17 to find it, but when the bird finally appeared, it was in good scope view in the middle of A17.Ē

The bird was seen at the same place as Dave describes at 6PM. It was in a group of Marbled Godwits and Willets (and Avocets and some Dowitchers). A scope was necessary to pick it out in that group of birds the first time. Once it was found though, it could be tracked with binocs.

    California birders,

This fall is already shaping up to be an exciting one, with many rare birds found in September and through the first half of October. Some of these birds are not only unusual locally, but are quite rare throughout the state of California.
As such, the California Bird Records Committee (CBRC) requests documentation of these birds for evaluation and archiving. I have summarized below some recent records for which the CBRC solicits documentation; if you have photos, written descriptions, or other
documentation for any of these birds, please consider taking the time to send them to the secretary at the email address below. I do realize that some of these birds were found very recently, so perhaps documentation is still forthcoming. Feel free to forward
this message to local listservs as appropriate. The CBRC website has a complete
list of review species as well as an
optional form for submitting written documentation.

Birds for which the CBRC has received no documentation:

Black-bellied Whistling Duck, Roberts Lake, Sonoma County (documentation has been received for the bird at Howarth Park in August (CBRC #2015-076))
    Emperor Goose, Del Norte County
Bulwer’s (or whatever) Petrel, Santa Cruz County
    White-chinned Petrel, San Mateo County
    Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Monterey County
    Bar-tailed Godwit, San Francisco County
Blue-headed Vireo (possible), Los Angeles County
Blue-headed Vireo (possible), Santa Barbara County
    Dusky Warbler, Marin County
    Common Grackle, San Bernardino County
    Common Grackle, Del Norte County

Birds for which the CBRC has received minimal documentation:

Red-footed Booby, Platform Eureka, Orange County (1 report)
Glossy Ibis, Yolo County (1 report)
Curlew Sandpiper (juvenile), Santa Clara County (2 reports)
Curlew Sandpiper (adult), Santa Clara County (1 report)
Broad-billed Hummingbird, Riverside County (2 reports)
Blue-headed Vireo, Marin County (2 reports)
Gray-cheeked Thrush, Kern County (3 reports)
Worm-eating Warbler, Mojave Narrows Regional Park, San Bernardino County (2 reports)
Worm-eating Warbler, Primm Valley Golf Club, San Bernardino County (2 reports)

  21. Continuing Alviso Ponds Bar-tailed Godwit (Update) LINK
    DATE: Nov 17, 2013 @ 1:11pm, 4 year(s) ago
    Folks:

This morning, 11/17/13, I saw the continuing BAR-TAILED GODWIT in
Pond A9 from about 0925 to 1045 hr. Matthew Dodder had pointed out
where he had last seen the godwit, about a hundred meters away, but
most of the birds were sleeping. At about 0925 hr, the local flock
there flushed, took a few turns around and returned. Dom Mosur rode
up about then and we search through the flock, finding the godwit on
the edge nearest us, giving good scope views. I watched it on and
off over the next hour until a number of the flocks in the northeast
corner flushed and I lost it. A new crew of five or six birders
started scanning the re-established flock and I left on my bicycle to
return the Alviso Marina. Two birders were scanning a nearer string
of roosting shorebirds near the A14/A9 junction and had the
Bar-tailed in their scope. The distance was perhaps 75 or 80 m, and
the light was excellent. I cycled back to the other crew and all
moved over to the new location and I expect many obtained good views
    (about 1045 hr.)

A few birds noted on my way out included a RED KNOT in A15 (only a
couple of dozen shorebirds there when I passed by) and a couple of
SANDERLING in A9. Matthew has also mentioned he saw a Short-eared
Owl adjacent to A9 and Jim and Will Brooks spotted an American
Bittern in Triangle Marsh (adjacent to A15).

All observations have been from the Alviso Slough Trail that starts
from the Alviso Marina CP in Alviso (San Jose). This trail is about
nine miles around the ponds and the observations this morning were
near the 4-mile marker (CCW route). You can also access the location
from the Alviso EEC, but it adds a couple of miles extra travel. A
bike is helpful and a scope is essential. This is the third day the
bird has been seen. On Friday and Saturday, it was found in the
morning on A15 and then moved west into A9. This morning it was only
in A9. As the high tide was not until about noon today and favored
foraging grounds (which are not easily seen with current optics) do
not uncover until later in the afternoon, there may be a fairly large
window to observe this species. We have been fortunate that it has
been roosting in the northeast corner of the pond, which can be
scoped from the trail. The pond is very large and the Friday survey
crew that found the godwit counted well over 30,000 shorebirds
roosting on Pond A9. If you park at the Alviso Marina to go out on
the Alviso Slough Trail, there is an information board next to the
restrooms and you can pick up a map of the trail that identifies the
    various ponds.

The apparent juvenile BAR-TAILED GODWIT was refound this afternoon on
the northeast corner of Alviso Salt Pond A9. A small group of birders
was able to view it between 100PM and 215PM. It then flew with the mixed
shorebird flock -- first northward and then eastward.

    Hi everyone,

Last night or yesterday afternoon, Wes Fritz photographed a female Bar-tailed
Godwit on the beach in front of the Sea Landing at the Santa Barbara Harbor. I
saw some of the photos this morning. Late morning, I spent an hour and a half
searching for the bird from the harbor east to the volleyball courts, including
the Laguna and Mission Creek outfalls, to no avail. At the same time, Joan Lentz
was searching Ledbetter Beach, Hendries Beach, and Goleta Beach. Others have
searched today, as well. But I haven't heard any positive news.

There's still a chance this bird is around somewhere. Devereux might be a good
bet. I believe Wes was planning to look there.

There are very few spring records of this species anywhere in California. And
this is the first to have been recorded at any season in Santa Barbara County.

    Arctic Shorebird Demographic Network
    Color-marked Shorebird Resighting Report

The Arctic Shorebird Demographic Network (ASDN) is an international
collaboration between shorebird biologists who are currently conducting a
multi-year study to examine mechanisms behind declines of North American Arctic-
breeding shorebirds.  The Network collaborators’ are color-marking shorebirds
    at
7 sites in Alaska (Yukon Delta, Nome, Cape Krusenstern, Point Barrow, Ikpikpuk
River, Prudhoe Bay and the Canning River) and 4 sites in Canada (Mackenzie
Delta, East Bay and Coates Island in the northern portion of Hudson Bay, and
    Churchill).

We would be delighted to receive reports of color-marked shorebirds observed
away from the breeding grounds.  Please look for marked birds of the following
species and fill out the following resighting report:

               American Golden-plover           Pluvialis dominica
               Semipalmated Plover                Charadrius

All ASDN birds are marked with a white (Canada) or dark green (USA) flag and a
color band.  The engraved flags will have a 3 letter code of letters or
    numbers,
written in white on the green flags or written in black on the white flags, and
an additional color band (e.g. red, dark blue, orange, dark green, yellow) below
the flag.  Most birds will also have three unique color bands on the opposite
leg to further facilitate individual identification during the breeding season,
as well as a US Geological Survey/Canadian Wildlife Service metal band with a
    unique serial number.

  29. 2010 big year (long) LINK
    DATE: Jan 3, 2011 @ 7:07pm, 7 year(s) ago
    Calbirders,
In 2010 I fulfilled a long-time goal of doing a big year in California.
The year ended with 444 species. In addition, I saw 16 non-countable
species. I birded daily except for March through mid-June due to a
    work-induced hiatus.
My non-birding friends found some aspects of my big year experience
    humorous, interesting and/or offensive, including:
    * over 32,000 miles driven in the State
    * 18 round-trip plane trips to Northern California from LA
    * 5 unsuccessful trips from LA to Newberry Springs to look for Common
Grackle (I eventually got a different bird in LA)
    * 2 trips / 4 mostly rainy days spent looking for Brown Shrike
    * 14 unsuccessful trips to La Mirada Creek Park to look for
Dusky-capped Flycatcher (I got it on my 15th trip. I have no plans to
    ever visit LMCP again.)
    * 4 unsuccessful trips to look for the Pyrrhuloxia

I missed 65 of the 499 countable species reported in eBird this year,
    including some common species:
    * Sooty Grouse
    * 14 pelagic species
    * California Condor
    * Barred Owl
    * Northern Saw-whet Owl
    * Gray Vireo
    * Pine Grosbeak
I was left with a new appreciation for the heroic effort of the Howes in
their record big year. I also developed a strong belief that eBird is
an important and powerful tool for capturing status and distribution
data. I believe we are just scratching the surface of what that
database will eventually become. BirdsEye was a great tool for planning
    trips using eBird data.
Thanks to the many birders who report in eBird or the listservs, and to
    those who provided generous help!
Below is a list of the birds I observed during the year. Feel free to
contact me offline if you have any questions or if you would like to
flame me for my use of fossil fuels.
