The Audubon Kern River Preserve Headquarters, Weldon, Southern Sierra nevada, Kern County, California, VIOLET-CROWNED HUMMINGBIRD was seen again at 12:48 p.m.today by Bruce Garlinger and Denise LaBerteaux at the hummingbird feeder station off the nature trail JUST beyond the visitor center. Bruce and Denise are among the very few lucky ones to have now seen this species multiple times at this location. This is now a July 7-28, 2019, twenty-two day bird - with some days, especially recently, lacking little to any search coverage.
I definitely feel for those of you who have driven 100s of miles on more than one occasion while still having missed this hummingbird. It is definitely difficult to sit and watch for 15 hours from first light to last light; especially without the guarantee that this bird will appear. Some have seen it within a few minutes of arriving at Kern River preserve Headquarters while others have been cursed despite many long hours looking. This bird just hasn't establish a reliable pattern of occurrence to narrow the search window.
Serving as the Messenger Bruce Garlinger & Denise LaBerteaux's Request,
